Improvising on Jazz Standards

Group guitar class taught by Adam Levy

When people talk about "playing over the changes,” they mean improvising melodically in a way that jibes with the song’s given chord changes. Yes, you’ll learn some arpeggios in this class, but this approach is about more than that. Expert-level improvisers know how to nail the changes while playing tunefully and telling a wordless story. That will be our aim!

I've released several albums of original jazz tunes, as well as heart-on-my-sleeve singer-songwriter records. My studio session work often bridges these two musical worlds as well (Norah Jones, Tracy Chapman, Lizz Wright, Meshell Ndegeocello, Anaïs Mitchell).

Adam's highlights

What you'll do

Week 1: Analyzing the Changes

This week, we'll look at a few familiar standards and break down the chord progressions so that you'll understand how to move through them with ease.

Week 2: Phrasing

In this week's class, you'll learn how to phrase like the pro's. Where to start, where to end, and how to keep it all flowing in between.

Week 3: Analyzing the Changes — Next Level

Again, we'll study some familiar standards — like we did in Week 1 — but these tunes will be a little trickier.

Week 4: Make It Personal

In our final session, you'll learn how to go beyond simple exercises and actually say something personal with your improvised lines.

Who you are
You should know the melody and chords to some common jazz standards, like "All the Things You Are" and "Autumn Leaves". You should know your way around the fretboard. You should also be familiar with recordings by some of the great jazz guitarists past and present — like Kenny Burrell, Joe Pass, and Peter Bernstein.
What to bring
Your guitar is all you'll need.
