Become a more melodic soloist by learning to understand chord progressions and how to use multiple pentatonic scales, the modes, and arpeggios to highlight the changes in any song that you play. In this ongoing course, we'll start with an overview of the basic minor and major pentatonics and how the CAGED system relates to 5 scale fingerings. This leads to how to switch from major to minor in one area of the neck, or within the same phrase. We'll also take a look at some alternate pentatonic scale choices - Dominant, Minor 6, and Altered. Next up, we'll tackle the modes. I'll share my way of thinking of adding color notes to the pentatonics to create the modes. We'll talk about how to analyze chord progressions in a very quick manner to find the correct modes to use. I'll also share how the basic modes lead to some alternate scales - harmonic and melodic minor. Then we'll get into triads and arpeggios. The small structures are great ways to break free from the scales and they help highlight the notes of the chord that you're on. There's so much you can do with them!! Along the way, I'll choose various songs across multiple genres to help contextualize what we talk about. All of the theory needs to be put into use, so we will do that every lesson. I look forward to sharing these core ideas of improvisation and how they'll help you play over anything you want!

I am a professional musician with multiple graduate degrees in music and have been teaching for over 25 years. My style is a mix of jazz theory, emotional blues-based playing, and a good amount of shred all within an improv setting. I look forward to sharing & taking your playing to the next level!

Gabriel's highlights

What you'll do

Pentatonics - Major/Minor/Dominant/Altered

Breaking down various pentatonic scales to use for improvising. There's more than just major and minor, so we'll explore other colors with some modifications of the scales you might already know.

CAGED - Chords/Arpeggios/Pentatonics/Modes

Exploring how the CAGED system can be used to outline all of the primary building blocks of playing - chords, scales, and arpeggios. That includes - major, minor, maj7, min7, dom7, m7b5, and more!

Modes - They Are EASY!!

Everyone tends to get lost with the modes, but I think they're easy. I'll get into how I think of them, using pentatonics and adding color tones. This is also where we'll discuss how to analyze chord progressions to you know which mode to use when.

Combining Major and Minor

We'll explore how to mix major and minor ideas over the same context. This happens in the blues and in funk a lot, so we'll look at how shifting just one note can change the phrase you're playing.

Blues Based Ideas

We'll go deep into how blues phrasing uses a variety of scales and techniques. Bends, vibrato, slides, and targeting notes will form the basis for this topic.

Triads and Arpeggios

There are so many kinds of chords, so there are so many different arpeggios. However, if you understand how to build a chord, you'll be able to build arpeggio ideas too. We'll start with triads to help build larger structures.

Jazz Ideas for Everyone - Scales & Substitutions

This is the really deep theory stuff that I love - Melodic and Harmonic Minor Scales, Diminished, Whole-tone, and other exotic scales. Arpeggio and chord substitution is also a huge idea that we'll try to scratch the surface of. However, I'll tailor it to non-jazz related contexts so you can see the value in adding these elements to your playing.

Technique

All along the way I'll talk about alternate picking, sweeping, economy picking, tapping, compound bends, slide guitar approaches, etc. Technique is very important for helping us to express our ideas, so I have a lot of tips for developing these.

Improvisation

I'll be sharing tips for improvising all the time. That's kind of my thing, but we can get into some deeper ideas about phrase construction, note mapping, and other concepts that I share with private students.

Who you are
You should have a full understanding of open chords and have basic understanding of barre chords. Prior knowledge about the pentatonic scale will be helpful, but not essential.
