Modes De-Mystified!

Group guitar class taught by German Schauss

4 lessons · 1 hour per week · intermediate

New

Unlock one of the most powerful and misunderstood tools in music: the modes. This 4-week online course cuts through the confusion and gives you a practical, musical understanding of all 7 modes in the diatonic system — not just what they are on paper, but how they sound, how they feel, and how to use them in real playing situations. Whether you've tried to learn modes before and got lost in theory, or you're approaching them fresh, this course is built around doing — playing, listening, and composing from day one. By the end of the four weeks, you'll be able to identify modal sounds by ear, construct modal chord progressions from the ground up, and solo fluently over modal vamps using scale tones, pentatonics, and superimposed arpeggios.

What you'll do

Week 1 — The 7 Modal Scales: Sound, Shape & Understanding

We cover all 7 modes and train your ear to hear what makes each one distinct. Using both parallel and relative approaches, you'll build a complete mental and physical map of the modal system — with all 7 modes under your fingers by the end of class.

Week 2 — Major Modes: Lydian & Mixolydian

We explore the two major-flavored modes — Lydian's dreamy raised 4th and Mixolydian's bluesy dominant sound. Using drone vamps and modal chord progressions, you'll learn which triads define each mode and how to keep your playing firmly in the modal sound.

Week 3 — Minor Modes: Dorian, Phrygian & Locrian

We dig into the minor modes — soulful Dorian, exotic Phrygian, and the unstable but fascinating Locrian. You'll build progressions that lock in each modal identity and develop cadence awareness so your playing commits to the sound rather than drifting away from it.

Who you are
All levels of intermediate to advanced players welcome. A basic understanding of major scale positions and chord construction is recommended.
What to bring
All you need is your guitar and curiosity!
