A Bass Player's Guide to Harmony

Group guitar class taught by Nick Campbell Destroys

8 lessons · 1 hour per week · intermediate

New

A Bass Player's Guide to Harmony is the theory class I would give myself if I were starting my musical journey over again. In this masterclass series, we'll be doing a deep dive on all things harmony. We'll focus on all the theory you actually need to know if you want to play bass in any kind of band. We'll be starting at the very beginning of how to build chords and work our way up to more advanced concepts like modal interchange and triad pairs. By the end of this class you'll be able to understand the mechanics of almost any song someone asks you to play.

Hi everyone, I'm Nick Campbell. I'm a bass player. You might have seen me play with people like Pomplamoose, Scary Pockets, Charlie Puth, Meghan Trainor, Andy Arthur Smith, Vulfpeck, Michael Mayo and many others. I have two records out and am in a band called Shrek is Love.
What you'll do

How Chords Work

We'll start with the very basic mechanics of how intervals and chords work and go over techniques to help you hear intervals and chord qualities clearly and consistently.

Diatonic Modes and Chords

We'll go through the whole diatonic series in detail and learn how to use and identify these sounds. These are the basic building blocks of almost all popular songs. By the end of this segment, you'll know this stuff inside and out.

Secondary Dominants and Modal Interchange

Once we've mastered the basics we'll discuss how secondary dominant chords and modal interchange work, how they relate to key centers and how they are often used in popular songs.

Voice Leading, Inversions and Slash Chords

We'll also go over common voice leading techniques that songwriters and arrangers use to make moving between chords more interesting.

Diminished Chords, Tensions and Altered Dominant Chords

Once we've mastered everything else on this list, we'll go over more complicated sounds and how to deal with them. By the end of this segment you should be able to understand how most songs in the real book work.

The Blues

The blues has a special place in all American music. It also has some particular idiosyncrasies that differ from the rest of the Western theory system. We'll go over a basic blues, minor blues and different jazz blues forms and how the logic of the blues continues to influence modern music today.

Who you are
This class is designed for players of almost all levels. My goal here is to give you a complete and holistic understanding of how harmony works. Before taking this class it would be helpful to know at least the names of the notes and where they are on your instrument.
What to bring
You don't need any equipment beyond your laptop and something to take notes with. I'll be providing summaries for each class and some musical examples to check out as well.
