Teaching on Til since 2026

Hey everyone! My name is Michael Isacs and I'm a session and touring musician living in Los Angeles with over 15+ years of performance experience. Recently, I've graduated from the UCLA Jazz Program, won the ASCAP Louis Armstrong Award for Composition, and am the touring guitarist for Buddy.
What you'll do

Keys, Scales, and Chord Building

In this lesson, you will learn how to find the sharps/flats in all 12 keys! From there, I will teach you how chords are built with an approach via the scale and an approach via the guitar.

The Number System

In this lesson, we will continue on with the knowledge from last week and learn the number system. The number system is the way many musicians learn chord progressions fast and in any key! After this lesson, you'll be able to analyze the majority of chord progressions, move their keys, and we'll even start building our own common chord progressions.

Building Chord Progressions and Melodies

Now that we've gone over the fundamentals, we can get into the fun stuff! We'll talk about building chord progressions in major and minor + one of my favorite concepts known as modal borrowing! After that, we'll talk about writing diatonic melodies.

Who you are
We will start from the ground up! There will be a lot of talking and writing down ideas. Saying that, if you want to apply this information to the guitar, you should be able to play barre chords consistently as well as tried some chord melody songs.
What to bring
A guitar, and a notepad.
