Expanded Listening

Group guitar class taught by Bob Lanzetti

One of the best things you can do as a musician is to check out new and unfamiliar music. Together we'll listen to and discuss some of my favorite recordings from artists in a variety of guitar and non-guitar based styles including jazz, fusion, blues, classical, experimental, country, and more. I'll say a few words about each piece of music: what I've noticed through listening over the years, what I've learned from a particular solo, the artist's influences and/or followers, etc., but mostly we'll just be listening. I hope this can be a great resource to discover new music and/or fill in some gaps you may have missed.

Hello! I am a guitarist, composer, educator, and founding member of the multi-Grammy Award winning jazz/funk band, Snarky Puppy. My experience as a member of a band as well as a freelance musician has helped me gain the tools and skills needed for a successful career, which I can pass along to you!

What you'll do

Listening

I'll play a variety of tracks in no particular order that I've found particularly inspiring over the years. The only stipulation is that I’ll try to highlight music that is slightly less well known in an attempt to impart something new to you.

Who you are
All music has something to teach you. If you’re open to the lesson, it may open doors that could change or expand your own music. If your goal is to play great blues guitar, what might exposure to free jazz bring? If you’re producing pop records, how might an understanding of 20th-century classical music shape your work? My hope is that this class serves as a gateway to your continued exploration and creative growth.
What to bring
A willingness to hear music you may not have heard before, some of which may be a bit challenging, and a decent pair of headphones.

Bob was very helpful and attentive to my questions and goals, not minding when I took a hard left with a question or asked for further explanation. He recommended some books, created some materials for me, gave me some exorcises to work on and some gear to look into to achieve the sound I'm looking for. Highly recommended
